Yukina was in a bit of a pickle. Recent events that shook the Gotei were something she felt responsible for. After a rather offensive outburst toward someone that didn't entirely deserve it, the girl was kidnapped and apparently poisoned again. Yukina was only getting information from the rumors that floated about and hadn't had the courage to approach anyone about it. After all, Kaminari leaving against orders was her fault, but that wasn't the only thing bothering her.

With a little too much on her mind, Nina actually did not feel like training. She arrived in the training grounds and looked around with no motivation to do anything. She found herself sitting quietly on a bench with her bag on the floor to her right. She pulled out a notepad and began jotting things down, but nothing she came up with stuck. At least an hour passed her by and the small trashcan next to her was full and many other crumpled up papers were scattered about. The notepad was almost at its last page and still she couldn't figure anything out. She had writer's block and it was more frustrating than the stress. DAMN IT! she shouted angrily and stood up, throwing her note pad and pencil to the ground as hard as she could, only to sit right back down.

To say that things had been busy around the Gotei as a whole and the Tenth Division in particular the last four days would be a grandiose understatement. Things had not only been busy but hectic and stressful. Or at least, it had been that way for Genpaku, who had been devoting most of his time over the last 96 hours to transitioning his Division into a state of readiness for the problems they were about to face. In some cases, he'd even been more directly dealing with some of the concerns that had come up. The end result of all of this? Genpaku was running on about fourteen hours of sleep over those last four days.

He'd done well thus far about keeping the exhaustion off his face while his Division was watching. He'd moved and organized things with at least a shadow of the quick efficiency that he did things with and so he'd managed to keep most of the stress and fear from seeping into this Division in those first few hectic days. It wasn't helping that, in a practical sense, he was pulling double duty in this instance. Usually, a Captain could leave some of the duties in such a situation to their Vice-Captain. However, given the recent events that had transpired and the events still taking place around the capture of Yua Ichinose he had not bothered to reach out and drag Kei back into her duties. She likely still needed some time to get her head back together given everything that had transpired. He could have shifted some of responsibility onto his Third Seat, except that Hanae was also currently applying for transfer out of the Tenth Division.

As far as command structure, Genpaku was about it as far as the Division with the largest area of concern in the Gotei at the moment.

So it was little wonder that the exhaustion had begun to get to him. He'd dropped Kaminari off back at the Fourth Division for a follow-up check at Midori's insistence. It gave him a moment to run incident reports around to a few key places, and get some things handled. So he found himself walking along the corridors of the Tenth Division complex, taking a rare moment to himself to let the mask drop and the exhaustion show. He was still moving, but with no one watching he could just move without worrying about people watching him and drawing worry because of things they'd see. No one needed that right now. When someone shouted, he moved without really meaning to though.

He appeared at the entrance to the training grounds, eyes immediately scanning them for some kind of enemy. However, only one person was present and they were well within their right to be here. Though it seemed that she'd been working on something without much success. He took a moment to get the mask back in place before he drew attention to himself.

    “Writer's block, Miss Togami?”

Post by Serenity Thu Jan 19, 2017 9:09 am

Nina was ready to give up at this point. Nothing was coming to her head. No story was sticking, rhymes weren't working, and characters were falling flat. When she heard his voice, her initial response was a tinge of happiness and excitement. In that same moment, reality threw her off her feet and the dread set in. She hadn't even gotten a chance to look to him before it all turned around. He must have known about the argument he and Kaminari had. Great. Just fucking great.

"How'd you know?" she asked and turned toward him with a shame cloud over her head, "I could have been sketching or something, though the lined paper might have given that away." Nina sighed when she noticed the litter she just let lie around. She quickly moved to the ground to pick it all up, bumping her knee on the ground pretty hard. She ignored it to clean up and began pushing the papers down in the trashcan so they'd all fit and she wouldn't get in trouble.

"So what brings you to the training grounds?" Nina asked while clapping her hands together to dust them off, "I figured with what happened a few days ago, you'd be taking a break from training to watch over... the Division." Nina caught herself in that moment. The accusatory tone she spoke with was a little obvious and not once could she look him in the eyes. She may look toward him, but she always avoided his actual gaze. "Is there something I can help you with, Captain?"

Genpaku indeed did not miss the accusatory tone in Nina's voice.  While Genpaku didn't know the source of it, he could pick out likely what Nina was going to say until she'd caught herself.  Truth be told, he had not planned on dealing with this particular situation yet; he had enough on his plate.  But sometimes, the timing isn't yours to choose.

“Was actually just passing by,” he said, holding up a large folder of papers for Nina to see in response to her first question.  He took note that she refused to meet his eyes; even exhausted, he was enough on the ball to catch on to that.
“Is there something you need help with, Miss Togami?” he asked.  He looked around her, at the papers she had just cleaned up, and then back to her.  It was rather obvious that she had much on her mind.  He probably shouldn't have been looking to take on more problems given all that was going on.  Then again, Genpaku had never been very good at turning a blind eye to others in trouble.

Nina barely glanced to the files he presented before looking off again. His question allowed her to look him in the eyes for the first time. The expression she held was dull and questioning whether he actually cared. She pointed at herself as if she weren't sure what he was talking about. "Me? I don't know what I would need help with." she said without hiding her annoyance as she picked up her bag and began packing her writing tools into it. She was moving quickly, as if she felt the need to escape from this place now. Nina's movements soon slowed down while she packed up. She sat in silence for a moment, her back to her Captain, and then sighed as a sadness took over.

"I'm sure you heard about Hanae's transfer." she said as she zipped up her bag with a quick snapping motion and then wiped an emerging tear from her right eye, "She's joining the Sixth Division; she wants to be with her family now. Can't exactly blame her, but..." In that moment, Nina wasn't sure whether she let something slip that she shouldn't have. She let her emotions get away with her again and may have said too much. Rolling her eyes mostly at herself, Nina turned back to Genpaku with a defeated shrug, "Did you even know about that?"

With her comments, Genpaku thought he had an idea of what was bugging Nina.
“Yes; Miss Jukodo approached me yesterday about her transfer request,” he confirmed.  Technically speaking, he thought that some of the files might well be in the folder he was carrying right now.
“You don't want to blame her, but your best friend is leaving,” he said; his tone was soft, as understanding as he could make the tone at this time.
“Miss Jukodo may be leaving, but last I checked we and the Sixth Division don't share any particular animosity.  She's not moving to a far section of the Rukongai.”

Well, that was a surprise. She actually thought he would have known. With the way he answered, Nina could at least be glad that she didn't spill the beans on her best friend. That was one ounce of relief she had, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to truly make her feel any better.

Nina almost looked pained for a moment. She raised her shoulders and turned her head away, not wanting to hear that. "Don't. Don't do that." she put up a hand and shook it, "What is far to me is not far to you. It takes me an hour to get to the Sixth. An hour may not seem like much, but unless I cut my training and duties down, it is. Hanae was the one I sparred with; she kept me going even when she was being lazy. Sometimes her damn laziness helped me out because I'd be forcing her to continue on. We work well together, even have a similar fighting style. Now..."

Nina just shook her head and put her hands on her hips. She was obviously stressing out as her voice became strained. She looked to the bag she had filled and zipped up and decided to just kick it. "I don't know what I'm gonna do!" she watched the bag hit a nearby training dummy and then hit the dirt. Before he could say a thing, she turned to him and glanced him up and down. "How the hell are you not freaking out with everything going on in your Division? The Lieutenant has vanished, Hanae is transferring, Kaminari was almost kille-..." She stopped there, a wave of guilt moving over her face before she asked with genuine concern, "How's she doing?"

Post by Genpaku Sat Jan 21, 2017 5:52 am

Genpaku let Nina go on her rant, as it genuinely seemed like she needed to get it off her chest. She turned on him before too long, starting down a long series of questions before she stumbled on one. He let her question hang in the air for a moment, partly just so he could work out an appropriate answer.
“She's scared,” he said at length. “She's been the target of two abductions in the last year; the first time it was because of her connection to someone else. This time though it was about her; one of them wanted her. Wanted to keep her. Understandably, she's rather freaked out about that. For all that, it could be worse. Her physical injuries were deep but isolated, and Captain Hayashi is a miracle worker. I imagine Hatakeyama will bounce back given enough time; she's the resilient sort like that. Most of you are,” he said and it was apparent by his comment that he was talking, with some small pride, about not just them but the entire division.

“Things are going to be tough in the days to come, and all any of us can do is do what we think best.” It seemed like he had more to say, but he stopped there. Partly because he couldn't figure out the words for what he wanted to say. Understandably, his brain wasn't exactly running at its normal rate even if he'd cudgeled his body into doing so.

The news wasn't surprising. Kaminari being scared after all of that shit? Nina's guilt set in stronger and it wasn't hiding. Even the prideful comment her Captain made toward the guild members went mostly ignored because her mind went elsewhere. Nina took in a deep breath and sighed it out before crossing her arms and kicking at some dirt. That must be why he was here.

"You looked like you were going to say more." she said, sort of calling him out on it, "Am I in trouble then? I know that you know Kaminari leaving was my fault, so if I'm in trouble, just say so. I almost got her killed, so I expect a punishment." Nina sort of shrugged, but it wasn't an uncaring one. She just didn't know what to say. Once again, she couldn't look him in the eyes.

“In trouble for...what exactly?” he asked in the wake of silence Yukina's question left.  “In trouble for being a person, for having a disagreement with someone else?  Not actually a lot to punish a person for there in all honesty.  Would I have preferred you guys handled your disagreement another time?  Yes, I think it would have been great.  What are you going to do about it?” he said, giving a shrug of his own.  He'd thought on it for a while, but in the end he couldn't really punish someone for being a person.

“We all make decisions, and we can't know what those decisions will result in when we make them.  A lot of us have made decisions lately that have spiraled far farther than we expected them too.  All we can do is try harder next time,” he continued.  It felt like the right thing to say here.
“So you can stop standing there, expecting to get punished.”

"Well fo-..." Nina silenced herself when she realized that was a rhetorical question. He had thought on the situation from a leaders point of view, which she half-expected. Part of her thought he would be super mad because of who was involved. She should have known better than that. "The only one that has made a good decision these days is Hanae." Nina chuckled and rubbed the back of her head. She sighed and shook herself a bit, getting out of that tense state she was in. "There. Is that better? she asked half-jokingly, her own mood having lightened up a bit.

Nina eyed him for a moment and went to say something. She stopped, repeated the process, and then frustratedly ran her fingers through her hair to have her hands rest at the back of her neck. "You and Kaminari are living together, ri-?" she asked suddenly, sort of spouting it out, "Well, I mean... Ugh... Okay, the entire Division knows that, but um... Are you guys like a thing? I mean, are you a couple. You spend a lot of time together and since you are under the same roof, most people are assuming that you are. So, I was just curious. She obviously loves you. I mean, well, if you didn't already know, it should be obvious just by how she looks at you... I-uh... Ah, shit..." Nina facepalmed so embarrassed at what she had been saying, "I really need to learn to shut up."

The news that a) most of the division knew that Kaminari was effectively living at his apartment and b) they thought there was something romantic going on between them was not actually surprising to the young Captain. In many ways, it sometimes felt like the Divisions and the Soul Society as a whole operated more like a high school than the proper, upstanding military organization it was supposed to be. Or maybe its more accurate to say that life has a strange way of imitating high school in the grand scheme of things. Or maybe it was the other way around? However Yukina's final comment did give Genpaku pause, which gave Nina time to sit in the embarrassing silence that followed.

More and more, people were pointing out something between him and Kaminari. He had written off most as just people poking fun at him. He didn't generally think largely about romantic relationships at this point in his life. Frankly, his life usually felt complicated enough without the addition of such matters. However, with so many people pointing it out there had to be more too it. Or maybe he was just starting to overthink things again due to a great deal of stress and lack of sleep.

    Or maybe he wasn't.

He reached up and rubbed at his eyes, pinching the bridge of his nose as he shuffled his thoughts around and tried to kick his brain back into working order.

“No, Miss Togami. Miss Hatakeyama and myself are not romantically involved,” he said at length. This conversation had certainly taken a turn in a direction he had not been expecting. He let his hand drop, looking back at Yukina. Though he was passing it off with some poise, there was color in the young captain's cheeks.
“People tend to focus on what they find most interesting; such is the case when they assume that Miss Hatakeyama resides at my place all the time. In all honesty, she actually makes a habit at staying with others. I imagine it stems from a fear of being alone,” he said before he blinked and covered his face with his palm.

“Now whose letting their mouth run away without them,” he muttered.

Yukina became a little more observant when her own embarrassment died down. She had already said what she said, so there was no taking it back. That didn't mean she couldn't get a little bit of information from how he reacted to it. She stayed silent and let him talk. The first thing she could tell was that he was fucking exhausted. The fact that he caught himself too late when spilling a little trait of Kaminari's showed Nina how tired he was. There was also something else she noticed and could not help but smile at, but that smile was on the very bitter side.

"You're blushing." she called him out on it with a noticeably fake smile, "I've learned to notice the color of my own hair on people's faces. It doesn't help that your hair and skin clash against the blood rising in your cheeks, so hiding a blush from me is hard. A little embarrassed, Captain? Or is it shyness? Either is cute." Nina chuckled, but it sounded annoyed and frustrated over showing any actual humorous enjoyment she may have felt. "'Miss Hatakeyama and myself are not romantically involved.' Yeah, I don't buy it. One of you is in serious denial then. Don't be surprised if she speaks up. With that loud mouth, she can't keep a secret forever."  Nina let that sit for a second, "Fear of being alone? That I buy, since she needs to be everyone's friend."

Nina scoffed and shook her head, adjusting the bag over her shoulders. She had more to say, but wasn't sure how to say it. She turned away for half a second to walk off and then turned back. "So how many times do I have to sleep over for you to call me Nina? Or even Yukina?" Nina asked suddenly and with a hell of a lot of offense in her tone. The offense wasn't toward him, but what she felt. She dropped her bag without a care and clenched her fists. "Is that what I've been doing wrong? This isn't even a formal meeting and no one else is around..." she pointed furiously at her own chest and walked up to him until she was about a foot away and raised her voice, "What the hell do I have to do for you to even PRETEND that I am a friend? What is so wrong with me?"

Post by Genpaku Mon Jan 23, 2017 10:16 am

The response to Nina's outburst, her accusations, may not have been what she expected.  After all, Genpaku usually had some kind of answer for questions thrown at him.  In this case, however, he was caught entirely flat-footed.  He opened his mouth a few times, trying to come up with some kind of answer.  The simple truth was, he didn't know what to say or how to say it.  Maybe it was because he'd been running himself ragged the last four days.  Maybe it was the stress and worry that had clogged his brain.  Or maybe it was the simple fact that Genpaku, for all his talent, had little experience with women.  Thus was why he couldn't see the root that caused all of this.  Alas.

The silence stretched on for only a short time though; two, three seconds maybe, before it was broken by a new voice.

“Ah, there ya are Captain Arishima!” came an easy voice as an eclectic figure walked into the training grounds.  Mostly, it was the strange coat and hat he wore that made him stand out.  He had an easy smile and equally easy stride as he walked over to the still stunned captain.
“Captain Saionji sent me over to pick up some files you were supposed to get to him at some point today.  I know  you'd have gotten to it and all, but you know how the Captain gets about getting things done on time and all.  What with you running late, guess he just got impatient,” the man said with a  shrug.
“Uh...late?  Wha...what time is it?” Genpaku asked, obviously still off balance.
“Just half past noon, I think.  Time is a weird thing around here,” the man commented as Gen seemed to put some of that into context.
“Half pas...shit.  I was supposed to meet the Captain Commander ten minutes ago,”
“And my captain half an hour ago, but no worries.  Everyone runs late at some point,” the red haired man replied easily.  He took another two steps and threw an arm around Genpaku's shoulders, like they were old friends.

“Here, I'll take those documents you were supposed to bring to the Sixth, save you the stop and awkward conversation with Captain Saionji.  Not that you'd really need saving and all, but you know what I mean.  Besides, the Captain-Commander has to be waiting and you know he's got to be busy.  Captain Saionji will understand; take him some caramel rice cakes.  It'll soften him up more than you'd think.”  The red haired man continued his seemingly innane chatter for easily another twenty seconds before he was handed the files and the Captain of the Tenth Division would be on his way.  Genpaku, to his credit, would recover his balance a few minutes down the line and realize he had a very unfortunate and serious conversation to have with Nina.

The red-haired man watched Genpaku run off before giving a small shake of his head, placing the files under his arm, and turning to head off himself.
