The Night After [Closed] Empty The Night After [Closed]

Post by Serenity Thu Jan 12, 2017 6:05 am

It had been a long time since Lilith had felt like this. The day before was full of excitement, but not the kind she liked. Genpaku and Kei rushing into Hueco Mundo and having that portal close in front of her caused a bit more anxiety in her than she liked. She may not have shown it, even acted on a more playful side in front of the damn Arrancar, but she was mentally freaking out. Whether the two of them liked it or not, Lilith loved Kei and Genpaku like they were her own biological children. She'd kill and die for them just the same, so to have an entire realm between them was terrifying for her. Now that they were home and safe, Lilith was going to give them their space. They each had someone they cared about taken from them recently and one of them didn't get theirs back.

Lilith checked on Kei to make sure she was doing alright and then hunted Genpaku down. Once she found him in Kaminari's hospital room, that being the first damn place she looked because predictable, Lilith just let him be. He was probably drowning the world out with paperwork and Lilith actually wasn't sure what to say right now anyway. She wasn't happy with Kaminari. Knowing the two people most important to her were as 'okay' as they could be right now, she made her way to a certain someone. Well, she didn't go immediately. She went to the bar first for about an hour.

Knock, Knock, Knock. When the knock came to Tsubine's door, it wasn't light or urgent. It was just a knock of 'give me your attention now' and she wasn't going to stop until he answered. When he did, Lilith was leaning against his door frame. She wasn't drunk or even a bit buzzed. She was just upset. "I'm sleeping here tonight, alright? Deal with it." she said and slid her way behind Tsubine and toward his couch to sit down. "How's your day been? You alright?"

The Night After [Closed] Empty Re: The Night After [Closed]

Post by Tsubine Thu Jan 12, 2017 2:03 pm

Tsubine decided to take a bath. It might've been his third in less than a day, but he just needed it again. It, along with copius amounts of caffeine, was the only thing keeping the Captain-Commander awake for what was now thirty-six hours. Awake, but not happy. There was a tiny man screaming his lungs out inside of him. He was stressed about so much. That was, however, the problem with being a leader. Tsubine sighed as he head insistent knocking. His Lieutenant was probably going to bug him about him sleeping (and lack thereof) again.

However, the knocking was more... pleading than Tsubine remembered. He put on some shorts. When he opened the door, honestly, Lilith was the last person he expected to see. His wide-eyes showed that more than his lack of words. He blinked,
"Uh... al-alright." He let her squeeze by him, locking the door because neither of them felt like being disturbed right now. He sat down beside her, still moderately warm from the bath. "I have been in and out of meetings all day. I," Tsubine yawned, "actually haven't even slept. You, Captain Saionji—the younger, that is, and Captain Aizen are the only ones I haven't talked to today. So I've been busy, but... I guess as good as I can be considering what all is going on now..." Tsubine looked to change the subject. "Seems like you and Captain Morgan have had a bit of a talk. You haven't had to crash at my place like this in... hell, have you ever done this? Ah, not that I'm complaining... I think you're the person I need to talk to the most right now, haha. I take it that you're pretty strung out from yesterday still though, huh?"

The Night After [Closed] Empty Re: The Night After [Closed]

Lilith wasn't shy about checking Tsubine out when he answered the door. She looked the man up and down, raising an eyebrow before she made her rather demanding statement. She was glad to get a piece of eye candy; she hadn't in quite some time. She brushed passed him and made her way to his couch. "Who the fuck is Captain Morg-... Right. Ignore that." she waved off the statement, realizing it was a comment on her drinking. It wasn't a phrase she heard often, but she had been friend to liquor long enough that she got it. Lilith sprawled out on the couch and happily placed her feet over his lap after sliding her shoes off like she was in her own apartment.

"Ya think? Yesterday was hell. If anything had happened to Kei or Gen..." Lilith's upper lip twitched and a spark of rage ignited in the Mother's eyes for a moment. The first time Kaminari had been kidnapped, Genpaku and Kei were two of those who went after her. Lilith hadn't had a chance and sat waiting for those two to return safely. This time Lilith was able to follow, but she hadn't wanted Gen or Kei there. She would have gone herself, on her own, and brought Kaminari back if she had been fast enough to stop her silver haired quickster, but she wasn't. "That girl is nothing but trouble. This is the second time. I'm going to have to deal with her myself since she's still fucking up like this."

The Night After [Closed] Empty Re: The Night After [Closed]

Post by Tsubine Thu Jan 12, 2017 9:26 pm

Tsubine never got used to her propping her feet onto his lap. It seemed too intimate for these two. Tsubine also never complained about it. This was the most intimate thing they had. It wasn't something bad.
"You know more than I do how capable those two are." They would have taken care of themselves. The portal closing was obviously something they didn't think about. What Tsubine had heard was that Kei had jumped through first, but was knocked out and went back in. She, at the very least, was getting a hefty reprimand. Genpaku would as well, but for leaving the Captain's meeting. Of course, all of this would happen once the war was over. Losing a Division's command structure like that would be extremely detrimental to the war effort.

Tsubine placed a comforting hand on Lilith's knee. Well, it was a mixture of comforting and restraining. His eyes pleaded with her.
"Lilith, I can't let you do that." But I can't blame you for wanting to, his words seemed to say. "She isn't going to be getting out of this scot-free. Part of my day has been looking into her, and a lot of her history before joining the Gotei is mostly mundane... But no matter what, no matter how... irritated," Tsubine spoke the understatement, "you might be, even rightfully so, she's going to be investigated first."

"I... have a theory about what happened. It's a bit out there, but I keep having yesterday replay in my head. The Arrancar knew I'd come through. They waited for me, and they blitzed us as we walked through the portal. The punch that hit you probably was meant to go after me. You were just more headstrong at that time. And then what that... thing said makes me think it is. She said: 'It's funny actually, isn't this similar to then?' You mix all of that up, and what if I'm the one they targeted? What if Kaminari was just a bonus—or even bait to get me to go? ...Ah, I'm probably just overthinking this whole thing..."

Lilith raised an interested eyebrow at Tsubine's comment on Kaminari. She was actually surprised that Kaminari was going to be investigated, but then Lilith remembered something. "Ah... I get it. You're worried about what that Arrancar said, right? That shit about 'you won't trust her' or something?" Lilith chuckled and laid her head back into the couch. She rested her hands over her stomach and stared at the ceiling. "Yeah, that caught my attention too. That girl has been at the center of this the entire time and no one caught it? She had that thing inside of her and, from what I understand, she refused to make an appointment until recently. Doesn't the timing seem a little convenient to you? I may not be keen on the Fourth Division, but I know Midori would have found that shit a long time ago."

Lilith listened to his theory and tried to connect a few dots. The first was of the reason to target Tsubine. "I get that too, at least kind of. I'm not the best at putting things like that together, but you could be right..." The second was about why they'd use Kaminari of all people to lure in Tsubine? "I didn't know you and the beansprout were that close." Lilith raised an eyebrow, speaking about Kaminari and his relationship, "I know the girl tries her best to be friends with everyone, but I didn't think she'd be on your 'close friends' list. How the hell did you two meet?"

"There's that too, yeah." Tsubine nodded. That entire dialogue played through his head again and again. "I'm probably going to suggest that Midori make annual checkups mandatory, even if someone has to be dragged in." It wouldn't be a nice thing, but Tsubine saw it as the right thing. "The timing is strange though, you're right. I don't know what it means, but I think they were keeping tabs on her somewhat. That thing could've been some sort of monitoring device too..." Tsubine shook his head and spouted his crazy theory. Lilith seemed to agree, but she wasn't the thinking kind. Neither was Tsubine, but it was still nice to see that she could see his logic behind it at least. Tsubine chuckled as Lilith conjectured that he and Kaminari were close.

"That's the thing... We aren't close. Everyone refers to her by her first name, and I can never remember what position she holds. So it's her first name I refer to her by. But no, we aren't close... I saved her life a few years after I found Genpaku doing his hollow hunting. There was a raid on some bandits in the Rukongai, and she was found inside. She was skin and bones and had to be shielded from the daytime sun. It was obvious she had been in there for months if not years... That's about as much interaction as I've had with her. We don't talk much, though I have run into her while conversing with other Captains or friends. Other than that, nothing. The only thing I can gather is, and this is where my theory really gets weird, that they used her to get at Lieutenant Makabe or Genpaku to get at you to get at me. Convoluted, sure, but it makes sense. You are the closest person to me, but you're strong. Lieutenant Makabe and Genpaku are also strong. So they go after someone weak. It's smart if that's what they did." Tsubine thought for a moment, then spoke up again. "There... was one good thing that came out of that though. It's been too long since I've seen you excited like you were when you saw the bruise."

Lilith made sure to remind, or inform, Tsubine that Genpaku had grabbed that device and gave it to Midori. "We'll figure it out once she's finished with it. I'm glad it wasn't hand over to Yamanaka, otherwise..." Lilith just rolled her eyes and shook her head. Reika had a habit of getting something and getting you the results in six months to a year, depending on how much there was to find out about it. Of course, when she did that there would be a long packet of organized paperwork that came out more like a users manual, which was helpful. It was just not timely.

"Fifth Seat Hatakeyama of the Tenth Division." Lilith raised an eyebrow at Tsubine, "I know you have a hard time with names, but remember it. She's too much of a shithead to not. Also, the only reason I actually do is because of who her Captain is." Lilith laughed a bit, lying her head back into the couch to listen as he continued on. Everything about what Tsubine said clicked with Lilith nicely up until he mentioned the reason they may have used Kaminari. Her entire body tensed and the anger shined like fire in her eyes. She was seriously going to have to deal with that girl.

"There was?" Lilith's anger faded and she looked back at him. When he mentioned the bruise, her eyes brightened and she swung her body to sit up. "Yeah! Look at it!" she lifted her shirt to the under-bust and showed the dark blue mark that covered most of her stomach, "If I had been ready for that, it wouldn't have done nearly as much damage. Bitch knocked the wind out of me and well... Yeah, that shit hurt, but I don't exactly get hit like that often. Had Midori check it out, of course, and she said everything is fine. She was gonna heal it, but I was like 'nah, I want it'."

After a few moments of poking at it, Lilith dropped her shirt and looked back to Tsubine almost concerned. She stared silently at him for a moment and then suddenly whacked him upside the head. "You idiot!" she shouted in irritation, "You let her fuck with your head! I know what happened to Kenshin bugged you; It bothered me too. But don't you dare, ever, let some stupid bitch get under your skin like she did. What? Did you think I wouldn't notice!?"

Tsubine nodded and tried to memorize her position. It probably wouldn't stick, unfortunately. He tried to explain more than he knew. Speculation was all he had right now. There was only one fact he had in this case. Lilith had been excited about being hurt. That was one of the weird things about her. She liked a challenge more than anyone. It also worried him. Lilith was hurt by that Arrancar. With that knowledge, he knew his foe wasn't weak. No, she was at least as strong as the Arrancar from last year. That compounded his concern, and it showed apparently.
    "It's an impressive bruise."

Tsubine rubbed the spot where Lilith hit him. His eyes asked the obvious question, despite their tired worry. Hearing Lilith say
his name forced Tsubine to wince internally. She always said it differently than anyone else. He couldn't tell what it was, but just the way she said his name was distinct. No matter what mood she was in, it kept that quality. "No, no..." Tsubine sighed and began to unconsciously rub around Lilith's knee. "I figured you'd notice... It's not like I was trying to hide it or anything... but... Lilith, I am worried. That Arrancar is at least as strong as the one from last year. After the incident, I was recovering for a week, with another week in observation and... I don't want to lose anyone else. And I especially don't want to lose you."

The more he talked, the more her irritation faded. His last sentence stuck with her for a bit. It rolled around in her mind as her cheeks only began to mimic the color of her hair. "Tsst." she turned her head away from him and looked off at something random, "There ain't nothin' that's gonna take me down. You don't have to be worried about that kinda stuff, so don't." Lilith turned on the couch, placing her feet on the floor and sitting normally.

"I don't want anyone worried about me." Lilith said as she slouched over, her elbows resting on her knees and her hands laced with each other. She stared at the ground, the one eye that could be seen narrowed slightly. "We were all stupid last night. Every one of us acted recklessly, even if some more than others." Lilith spoke up after a few moments of silence, "Rushing into Hueco Mundo after one girl, and then rushing after those who rushed after her..."

"We left this place barely defended with a portal pretty much unguarded. You should not have come." Lilith glared toward him, not really at him, "I was enough to back them up, and Captain K. Saionji was more than enough backup for me, and even he shouldn't have come. If something big enough is going down that you felt the need to call for war, we cannot let that happen again. We did not have enough information to do what we did. We got lucky."

Tsubine wanted to correct Lilith. He would always worry about that. There was a part of him that worried about her and just her. It came up at random times, asking "I wonder how Lilith is doing today?" They lived so close, but their situation had only recently allowed them to come together again. It was during that year-long stint apart that he realized something. Ah, but that thing wouldn't be brought up today. First, he had to find the words to tell her. Tsubine just gave his best attempt at an aknowledging smile. It was obvious that he'd continue to worry, despite her protests.

Lilith was right. Tsubine came to that realization when the Arrancar disappeared. He had a backup planned. If things had gone south, there was a single 'button' that would be pressed. Tsubine leaned back to stare at the wooden ceiling.
"It's just another thing I'm too inexperienced to have realized at that time..." Tsubine shook his head. "You're right. I should not have, but... even if the portal was unguarded, I think who all we had here would have been sufficient to hold until we returned. We definitely were lucky though..." Tsubine went silent, his mouth drawn into a line. "I'm going to ask J to be my successor if anything happens to me. He'd be sort-of the emergency successor, but when I get too old or tired of this job, I'd be free to seek out a proper one. If he's still around at that time, it'll probably be him too."

It was in that moment that Lilith remembered that Tsubine had never been a regular Captain. He shot up through the ranks and instead of getting experience with a Division, he was thrust into commanding all of them. It wasn't until now that she really thought about that. "Right. That sucks." she said with a bit of a chuckle to poke fun at him, "I guess that's what happens when you jump over everyone and take high ranking positions without thinking." Lilith smiled and stuck her tongue out at him. She would never say it out loud, but she was jealous of him. She'd never want the Captain Commander seat in the first place, but she doubted she was ever even considered for it.

Lilith went silent and dull faced at Tsubine when he mentioned his successor. She turned on the couch to face him and leaned in with narrowed eyes. "For one... You don't need to be thinking about that anytime soon. For two..." Lilith whacked him on the head again, in the same spot as before, "Why the hell would you choose him!? Are you trying to turn this into some sort of nobility inheritance based on which first born gets their crown? You do that and the only people who will be leading the Gotei are the noble families. Centuries and centuries of Saionji leading the Gotei like a kingdom where they're the Kings and their successors are always blood-related."

"Hey, it wasn't like I was asked to take the job or anything... It just... sort of happened." Tsubine never liked how he was thrust into the position. He was glad to have the honor of holding it of course. However, Ryuunosuke had given him the burden of inexperience. Tsubine took it as a sign that he was ready to learn how things actually worked. And he wasn't. Tsubine learned new things about the job on a nearly daily basis. It was hard work being in charge of so many people. Tsubine finally let go of his wounded head only for it to get smacked again. "Ow!" Tsubine looked at Lilith with annoyed eyes this time.

"Okay, here's why anyone else wasn't chosen. Saionji the younger would've been my third choice. He's young, but he's got a good head on his shoulders. Midori is too good at her job to take her away from that." Tsubine didn't even have to mention Solas for a reason. "Captain Montgomery is... a bit too willing to stab people in the back, even if it is to save them. His Zanpakutō bothers the hell out of me. Genpaku is far too young and brash and too much like me. You... No offense, but you're not good at politicking. If strategy and combat readiness were the only primary duties of the Captain-Commander, I'd choose you. Simply no towards Captain Yamanaka. And... I think Captain Aizen likes being a teacher too much. I don't want to take him away from that. J, simply put, is the best man for the job. I could even put something into writing that says that the Captain-Commander position can not become a lineage thing if that happens..."

Tsubine slapped his knees and exhaled sharply.
"Anyways, you're right. I shouldn't think about that stuff." Tsubine tried to force up a smile again. "How have things in the Eleventh been this past year? Have I missed anything particularly exciting?" Tsubine changed the subject to go back to something from the night before. They still had quite a bit of catching up to do...

Lilith didn't particularly like his reasons for not choosing her, but it didn't mean he wasn't stating a few obvious facts. He was and she knew it, so she shrugged it off playfully, keeping a content smile on. "Do it. It's the only way many people would feel comfortable with that." Lilith said with a confident nod about her opinion, "The Saionji may be the sanest of the noble houses, but that doesn't mean people aren't uncomfortable with them. They're good guys, but still unapproachable by the small-fries and being led by someone who is not only powerful and a Captain, but nobility as well? I feel bad for the people in their squads." Lilith chuckled and went back to relaxing.

"Anything new? Like?" she raised an eyebrow at him, "Nothing new happens here. We do the same shit every day. Work, train, paperwork, and nothing more. Besides the excitement of recent events, which you're obviously not wanting to talk about, nothing has happened. Is there something new with you that you want to talk about?"

"I don't really know what we could talk about when it come to recent events. We were there, we saw the same stuff..." Tsubine gave her a light shrug. He honestly didn't know what to speak about. The silence that followed was telling. He gave her a small chuckle. "You'd think spending a year apart would yield some interesting conversation, but I guess we know each other well enough that anything that did happen wouldn't be interesting to the other." Tsubine stretched and yawned. "Again though, I'm sorry for staying away that long." Tsubine looked around for a moment, thinking. He decided against it. "So do you want the bed tonight or the couch?"

"The only time we've had long conversations was when we were drunk. Being a Captain sucks sometimes. There isn't much we can do for fun. Even if the Seireitei has expanded the entertainment in the last few decades, it's still dull to live here." Lilith saw his yawn and ended up replying with her own. She hadn't thought she was tired, but apparently she was on her way there. "No need to apologize." she said as a second yawn surfaced. His question caused Lilith to raise a suspicious eyebrow at him. There was something in his recent behavior that she was slowly picking up on, but didn't quite get just yet. "I can take the bed. Sure." she said like a challenge. She wondered if he offered just to see if she'd kick him out of his own bed. Lilith wasn't the type to care. She stood up and stretched by leaning back before yet another yawn came. "Shit, I'm more tired than I thought. To your bed then. G'night." Lilith walked around the couch, patting his shoulder as she said goodnight and then made her way to his room to sleep.
